Singing songs, eating snacks and exploring beautiful Victoria – what’s not to love about road trips! Going on a road trip together is a family activity that your children will remember forever. Whether you want to camp for a couple of nights over the holidays or make a weekend day trip, we’ve put together a list of our top five road trip destinations out of Melbourne.
- Phillip Island
The island is about two hours out of Melbourne in the south-east. You’ll drive through some beautiful countryside and coastal areas in the last part of the trip. Phillip Island has heaps of activities to do, the most famous of which are the fairy penguin parade and the A Maze’n Things fun park. It’s the perfect road trip for animal lovers and beach bunnies. Other activities include the koala centre, a farm, markets and beautiful beaches where you can view seals and check out rock pools.
- Port Fairy
The Great Ocean Road has been a family favourite road trip for decades and has many great destinations to explore it, such as the Twelve Apostles. Strap yourselves in for a longer car trip, Port Fairy will take you about three or four hours from Melbourne. It’s well worth the drive though. The fishing town is charming with stone buildings, old churches and big pine trees. There are beautiful beaches, markets and plenty of opportunities for viewing wildlife.
- Red Hill
Right on the Mornington Peninsula, Red Hill is a beautiful area to drive through, full of vineyards. There are farms you can visit the goats who make cheese or you can pick your own strawberries. For more adventure, the Ashcombe Maze is the perfect place to visit and get yourself lost in the hedges or look at the beautiful gardens. The peninsula area has lots of beautiful towns and beaches, so explore further if you’d like!
- Dandenong Ranges
The Dandenong Ranges are spectacular to drive through at any time of the year, with huge beautiful forests, waterfalls and gardens. If you’re only looking to venture out for the day, the Dandenongs would be perfect as they’re only an hour east of Melbourne. The tulip festival in September is a fantastic springtime event. In the meantime, visit one of the favourite waterfall walks like Olinda Falls or ride around on Puffing Billy steam train. There are endless trails and attractions to find and explore.
Journey along the Murray River and experience the road trip destinations that Victorians have loved for years. Echuca is less than three hours out of Melbourne. It has a lot of great camping spots, or you can rent a houseboat if your family is really adventurous. The historic town has some great bakeries, old buildings and beautiful nature walks. The national park is a favourite of the town with its rocky landscape and local flora and fauna.
