The Barefoot Policy is an initiative that originally started in the babies' rooms at our Derrimut Early Learning Centre. Initially introduced as a safety measure, the policy has since been recognised for its numerous benefits in supporting babies’ development.
Barefoot play allows children to explore their environment with direct contact between their feet and the surfaces beneath them. This direct connection enhances sensory awareness, balance and coordination, while also strengthening joints and muscles. It encourages natural movement, supports proper posture and promotes overall physical development.
The Barefoot Policy also ensures a clean, safe and hygienic environment for infants. The policy was first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to minimise potential contaminants brought in by shoes. As infants spend most of their time crawling on the floor, reducing their exposure to dirt and germs became a priority. To maintain this standard, parents, staff and visitors must remove their shoes or wear shoe covers before entering these spaces.
The Barefoot Policy has been well received by parents, who appreciate both its developmental advantages and the added layer of protection for their child’s health and safety. Due to its success at Derrimut, other early learning centres have also been inspired to adopt similar measures.
Anjila Singh, Educational Leader and Assistant Manager at Derrimut, has been instrumental in implementing initiatives that enhance children’s learning, safety and wellbeing. With nearly two years at Derrimut and eight years of experience in early childhood education, she continues to uphold high standards in early learning environments.
By incorporating the Barefoot Policy, our centres are not only fostering a cleaner and safer space but also supporting children’s natural growth and developmentAnjila Singh, Educational Leader and Assistant Manager at Derrimut
